How to judge roofing work
A roof is the one system that protects every other part of a building, which is why the way a contractor inspects matters more than the brochure. A thorough look covers flashing, penetrations, valleys and decking — not just the field of shingles — because that is where water actually finds its way in.
Roof lifespan depends more on installation quality and attic ventilation than on the material alone. Poor ventilation cooks shingles from underneath, and incorrect nailing patterns void many manufacturer warranties. The useful questions to ask any roofer are about process and sequence, not only price.
| Material | Typical lifespan | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Asphalt shingle | 15–30 years | Most common; ventilation strongly affects service life |
| Metal | 40–70 years | Standing seam generally outlasts exposed-fastener panels |
| Clay or concrete tile | 50–100 years | Underlayment usually needs renewal sooner than the tile |
| Slate | 75–150 years | Weight requires adequate framing capacity |
| Single-ply membrane (flat) | 20–30 years | Seams and terminations are the usual failure points |
What customers say
My wife and I are in the process of selling our home. Right before we go to list we experience our first ever “leak” in our guest bedroom. I searched through our local neighborhood app and Reddit to find a local roofer to help our situation. Both sources pointed me to Alteir. I reached out and spoke with Johnny. He was able to dispatch Chris to my location same day and discuss the issue. We apparently have a “dead zone” of water flow on the roof and over time, water will leak in with heavy rains like we recently experienced. He also inspected the rest of the roof and recommended other minor repairs. What I valued the most was Chris taking the time to take pictures of the issues and explain everything to me in a way I understood. Ok top of that, they came out quickly with the same roof tile to do the repair. If you need any roofing issues or just a professional opinion, I couldn’t recommend them more! Thanks Chris.

I called Altair to inspect and repair wind damage on our roof. They responded immediately, came put that day, and the roof was repaired a day later. Excellent job.

Altair did an amazing job with my roof. For 3 years, we had worked with several different companies for the same problem, but the issues always returned. They were never certain what was causing the leaks, and I never felt confident they would figure it out. After one of these bad storms, water just started streaming down the walls. Altair was the first to respond and come out. Chris was absolutely fantastic. He actually took the time to explain what he was finding in layman’s terms. He gave me a realistic action plan and didn’t just suggest a new roof and hope for the best. He was very informative and was patient with all of my questions and concerns. The crew was very efficient, and they were able to pinpoint the problem without needing to completely replace everything. If they did end up recommending a replacement, I would have trusted them. After the repairs, the leaks have finally completely stopped. I would absolutely recommend them!
